Sleeping
Bursitis: Avoid sleeping on the painful side, and place a pillow between your legs when side sleeping to keep the femurs aligned and decrease tension of the lateral hip tissues, especially the iliotibial (IT) band.
Hip Replacement: Follow your doctorâs recommendations for sleeping position while you are healing. Sleeping on your back with two pillows under the knees and a pillow between the thighs is safe for most hip replacements. If you cannot sleep on your back, sleep on the non-operated side with one or two pillows between the thighs to keep the femurs aligned.
For all other hip conditions and structures, using pillow(s) under the knees when back sleeping or using pillow(s) between the thighs when side sleeping will help keep the hips comfortable and structurally aligned.
